Environmental Assessment (EA)
Submit Comments Online, by FAX, or by Mail (see sample letter below)
Please submit comments on the findings in the document and explain WHY you are opposed to the GU boathouse in the Park, i.e., the EA failed to address significant impacts such as destruction of parkland; congestion at the entrance to the Park; potential impacts to historic Canal embankment during construction, maintenance and servicing of boathouse; impacts on the scenic viewshed of Potomac Gorge; hydrological impacts to area during floods; value of Park gateway site; impact on shoreline boaters from 75-ft. long private dock; potential impacts on public health if sewer line underground ruptures during or after construction; public controversy generated by the proposal. State that alternative locations, uses and sizes for new boathouses should be seriously considered outside the Park as part of a comprehensive study/full Environmental Impact Statement of the entire waterfront area.
The 22 organizations in the Defenders of Potomac River Parkland believe there will be "significant" impacts on the natural and human environment in this biologically rich and historic section of C&O national park--which is used by thousands of fish, ducks, deer, hikers, bikers, anglers, recreational boaters, and tourists and is also a natural floodplain. The plan also sets a precedent for private development in national parks.
The Defenders' goal is to force the Park Service to acknowledge that the impacts will be "significant," which by law requires the Park Service to prepare a full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the entire waterfront area that will seriously consider alternative locations outside of C&O national park. The Defenders support alternative locations outside of C&O national park.
Send a letter to Kevin Brandt, Superintendent C&O Canal National Historical Park.
